Dear Editor:
In the November 13, edition of NEWSWEEK, Sam Harris
makes a blistering
attack on those of faith. He calls religion "faith-based
nihilism." This
use of the terms "faith" and "nihilism" creates a
statement in
contradiction. Nihilism is the total disbelief in
religion or moral
principles; therefore, how could those of faith in a
Divine Designer of
the universe and moral law, be accurately called
nihilists?
Harris continues to criticize those of faith by claiming
that they have
"no incentive to build a sustainable civilization." Do
the skeptics
operate soup kitchens, clinics, and hospitals around the
world? Not that I
am aware of. Do those of faith give of their means and
time freely to
provide these types of facilities for civilizations
around the world? Yes!
So, who is the true nihilist? Not the Baptists,
Catholics, Methodists,
Jews, etc. Mr. Harris should be pointing his finger at
himself, the true
nihilist!
